Our picks

Best for live sonar and bass boats

Redodo 16V 30Ah Fish Finder

A dedicated electronics battery at 16 V, which Redodo says gives a brighter screen, in a case small enough to tuck under a console. It keeps your sonar on even after a long day drains the trolling batteries.

  • HELIX 10 + MEGA Live: about 11 hours
  • 7.63 lb
  • Bluetooth gauge
  • Charging pauses below 32°F

Best for a kayak: one battery for motor and screen

Redodo 12V 50Ah Bluetooth

Runs a trolling motor up to 70 lb thrust and a fish finder from one 11.27 lb battery. A HELIX 7 alone would run for about 56 hours on it.

  • 640 Wh
  • 11.27 lb

Best for the ice shelter

Bluetti Elite 30 V2

A 288 Wh power station with a 12 V car outlet for the fish finder, plus USB and wall-style outlets for phones, lights and a camera. It sits on the ice, not on your sled seat.

  • 1 A fish finder: about 20 hours

Myths, answered

"Any old car battery will do." A car battery is built for short bursts to start an engine, not to be run down all day, and it weighs several times as much as a small lithium. A deep-cycle lithium gives you all of its power and tells you how much is left.
"Lithium won't work for ice fishing." It discharges in the cold; it just must not be charged below 32°F (Battery University). Pick one that pauses charging in the cold, and charge it at home.

Frequently asked questions

What size battery do I need for a fish finder?

Most fish finders draw about 1 A, so a 10Ah lithium runs one about 10 hours, more than a long day. Add live sonar or a 10-inch screen and step up: a Humminbird HELIX 10 MEGA DI+/SI+ G4N with MEGA Live draws about 3.6 A together, which a 16V 30Ah Fish Finder battery runs for about 11 hours.

How long will a fish finder run on a battery?

Divide the battery's watt-hours by the unit's watts (amps x 12). A 12V 10Ah lithium holds 128 Wh; a 1 A fish finder uses about 12 W, so about 10 hours. Check your unit's manual for its current draw; we list common ones on this page.

Can I run my fish finder off my trolling motor battery?

You can, with a fuse, and on a kayak it saves weight. Many bass anglers use a separate electronics battery so motor noise doesn't show up on the sonar and a long day on the trolling motor never shuts off the screens.

Is a 16V battery OK for a fish finder?

Many units are built for it. Garmin lists 10 to 20 V for its STRIKER series, Humminbird 10 to 20 V for MEGA Live, and LiveScope Plus takes 10 to 32 V. Check your unit's input range before buying, and use a charger with a 16 V lithium setting.

What battery is best for ice fishing electronics?

A lithium with low-temperature charge protection. It runs fine in the cold but must not be charged below 32°F, so charge it indoors or in the truck. Redodo's 16V 30Ah pauses charging below 32°F and keeps running down to -4°F.
